Korean101.com produces a youtube video every week called, "Weekly Korean words with Jae." I have reproduced the sentences they create here, because for myself I find that the subtitles go way too fast and having to stop the video every few seconds is irritating. I thought that other people may have the same problem and this might help them. I haven't corrected the English grammar of the subtitles, so you will see that some times it is a bit awkward when you read the English translation.

August 12, 2014 Direction Words


1. East side 동쪽
일본은 한국의 동쪽에 있습니다.
Japan is located on the east side of South Korea.

2. South side 남쪽
강님은 한강의 남쪽에 있어서 "강남" 이라고 부릅니다.
Gangnam is located to the South of the Han river, and that's why people call it Gangnam (South of River).

3. Right side 오른쪽
저는 오른손 잡이여서 마우스를 오른쪽에 놓습니다.
I am a right-handed person, so I put my mouse on the right side.

4. Inside 안
내 안에 너 있다.
You are inside me.

5. Outside 밖
날씨가 추워서 밖에 나가기 싫다.
I don't want to go outside because it's cold.

Also good to know: West side 서쪽; North side 북쪽; and left side 왼쪽.

1. to dance 춤을 추다
나는 춤을 추는 것을 좋아한다.
I like dancing.

2. to play chess 체스를 하다
한국 사람들은 체스를 잘 안 합니다.
Korean people usually don't play chess.

3. to draw 그리다
부모님의 얼굴을 그리다.
I draw my parent's face.

4. to fish 낚시하다
한강에서는 사람들이 낚시를 합니다.
Near Han river, people do fishing.

5. to take a picture 사진을 찍다
사진을 찍어주시겠어요?
Could you take a picture (of me)?

1. Strawberry 딸기
옛날에는 딸기를 봄에만 먹을 수 있었습니다.
In the old days, you could only eat strawberries in spring.

2. Apple 사과
추석에는 사과를 꼭 먹어야 합니다.
You have to eat apples on Chuseok.

3. Apricot 살구
한국 사람들은 살구를 주스로 만들어서 자주 먹습니다.
Korean people often drink juice with apricots in it.

4. Grape 포도
어떡 사람들은 포도를껍질채 먹습니다.
Some people eat grapes unpeeled.

5. Plum 자두
자두 화장품이 인기가 많습니다.
Cosmetics made with plums are popular.


September 8, 2014 Hygiene Actions


1. to blow dry 드라이하다
우리 어머니는 외출을 할 때마다 꼭 드라이극 한다.
My mother always blowdries her hair when she goes out.

2. to shave 면도하다
저는 아침마다 2분씩 면도를 합니다.
I shave for two minutes every morning.

3. to take a bath 목욕하다
어렸을 때에는 목욕을 하기위해서 공중목욕탕에 갔습니다.
When I was little, I went to a public bathhouse to take a bath.

4. to comb 빗다
엄마들은 딸의 머리를 빗겨주는 것을 좋아합니다.
Mothers like combing their daughters' hair.

5. to wash 씻다
훈련소에서는 몸을 1분 만에 전부 다 씻어야 합니다.
In training camps, you have to wash your whole body within one minute.


September 16, 2014 Colors


1. Black 검은
저는 검은 양복을 좋아합니다.
I like black suits.

2. Yellow 노란
배가 아파서 얼굴이 노란색이 되었다.
My face got yellow because of a stomachache.

3. Red 빨간
저는 지금 빨간색 셔츠를 입고 있습니다.
I am now wearing a red shirt.

4. Blue 파란
무서운 영화를 봐서 얼굴이 파랑게 되었습니다.
My face got blue because I watched a scary movie.

5. White 하얀
한국 사람들은 하햔색을 좋아합니다.
Korean people like white color.

In Korea, you can find a dressing room only in very very big houses.

갑자기 소식이 와서 공원에 있는 공중화장실에 갔습니다.
I suddenly got some news, so I just went to a public restroom in a park.

When you give your business care in Korea, you have to give it with both hands.

4. Driver's License 운전면허증
한국에서는 국제운전면허증으로 운전할 수 있습니다.
You can drive a car in South Korea with an international driver's license.

5. Cash 현금
한국 사람들은 현금을 잘 가지고 다니지 않습니다.
South Korean people usually don't hold cash.

Korean idol music are popular among other Asian countries.

5. Jazz 재즈

Learn Korean Numbers (숫자)

Korean people use two number systems, Sino-Korean numbers, taken from Chinese, and Native Korean numbers, which only go from 1-99. You need to know both number systems because they are both used, (i.e. time is told by using both systems, Native Korean numbers for the hour and Sino-Korean numbers for the minutes.)

Here are the Sino-Korean numbers:

If you wanted to say 21 you would put the number 20, 이십, and the number 1, 일, together and get 이십일. 79 would be 칠십구. Pretty easy right?

Learn Korean 한글 (Hangul)

If you want to learn Korean you have to know the basics, and that means learning to read and write in 한글. Here are some resources that I have used, and have gathered from around the internet. Korean has 24 characters, 14 constants and 10 vowels, and many dipthongs

This webpage from zkorean.com is an excellent starting point. If you are able to listen to the audio portion you will be able to hear the name of the constants and the sound that they make. The vowels do not have names like the constants, they just have their own sound as their name.

There is also a great page from Learn Hangul here. You can click on any of the character sets and hear it pronounced. The chart is arranged a little bit differently from normal hangul charts, such as this one, because there are 7 mini lessons attached with to it.

If you are a bit more of a visual learner, this webpage has 3 charts that can be printed on A4 size paper, the constants are all different colors, which might help some people tell them apart.

If you want to install the Korean keyboard, so you are able to type in Korean, here is the place to go. Remember that you will need to restart your computer in order to start using the keyboard.


Here is a great little series of videos from KoreanClass101.com
Episode 1 has 1 constant and 2 vowels: 이응 (ᄋ) which only makes a sound when it is at the end of a word, but is used as a place holder at being of words and is silent then; ㅏis the first vowel in the alphabet; andㅣthe last vowel in the alphabet.


Episode 2 has 3 vowels; ㅓ, ㅕ, and ㅑ.


Episode 3 has 5 vowels; ㅗ, ㅜ, ㅛ, ㅠ, and ㅡ.


Episode 4 has 3 constants; 기역 (ᄀ), 키읔 (ᄏ), and 히읕 (ᄒ.)


Episode 5 has 4 constants; 니은 (ᄂ), 디귿 (ᄃ), 티읕 (ᄐ), and 리을 (ᄅ.)


Episode 6 has 3 constants; 미음 (ᄆ), 비읍 (ᄇ), and 피읖 (ᄑ.)


And lastly episode 7, the last 3 constants look similar; 시옷 (ᄉ), 지읒 (ᄌ), 치읓 (ᄎ.)

Here is a cute series that I think is really great. The first episode has vowels and consonants. I think this is the only series I found that teaches the actual names of the consonants. I can't emphasize enough how important it is to learn the actual names of the consonants, because that teaches you how a consonant should be pronounced at the beginning and end of a syllable block.


Episode 2 has combined vowels and the rest of the consonants.


Episode 3 has the double consonants.


And episode 4 is about 받침 (the final consonant in a syllable block.)

This video from Sweetandtasty TV.com is very helpful in learning the proper stroke order so you can write words properly.


SweetandTasty TV.com also has some worksheets you can print and use to practice writing.

2PM One Point Hangul episodes 6-10

Sorry it has been so long since the last post for this. If you would like to see the previous episodes please see this post.

2PM is my favorite idol group from Korea. The guys are funny, so it makes watching almost everything they do enjoyable while I try to learn Korean.

This series is actually for Japanese people to learn Korean, but the guys speak Korean mostly during each episode, so it can be really useful if you are trying to learn Korean.

I have copied down the Korean that is to learn, but I did not translate these episodes, that was done by Wild2Day, I just wanted to make it easier to follow the lesson by not having to stop the video every few seconds. I didn't add any romanization because I just didn't know if I should, but I put the Korean in large font for easier reading. I am not an expert, I am learning Korean myself.

Edit: March 2, 2015 I was able to find all the videos for this page, except episode 1. I couldn't even find it without subs, so if you happen to find it please leave a comment with a link to the video, thanks. The translations on the new videos are from rikakotsu @JunkayStreet, my writing is from the original translations I got from Wild2Day, so they may not match rikakotsu's.

Episode 6:



머리가 아파요.
My head hurts.

배가 아파요.
My stomach hurts.

가슴이 아파요.
My chest hurts.

You can easily replace body parts. Do you see the underlined 가 and 이 in the sentences above? These are subject markers, you can read more about them here. The short version is if the subject ends in a vowel (ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ, ㅕ, ㅗ, ㅛ, ㅜ, ㅠ, ㅡ, ㅣ, or one of the many diphthongs, ㅐ, ㅒ,ᅦ, ᅨ, ᅪ, ᅫ, ᅬ, ᅯ, ᅰ, ᅱ, ㅢ) you add 가 to indicate that is the subject. If the word ends in a consonant (ᄀ, ᄁ, ᄂ, ᄃ, ᄄ, ᄅ, ᄆ, ᄇ, ᄈ, ᄉ, ᄊ, ᄋ, ᄌ, ᄍ, ᄎ, ᄏ, ᄐ, ᄑ, ᄒ) you add 이. So, you can make new sentences like:

다리가 아파요.
My leg hurts. (But watch out because 다리 also means bridge.)

어깨가 아파요.
My shoulder hurts.

팔이 아파요.
My arm hurts.

Now you can add other words like:

Foot = 발

Hand = 손

Ear = 귀

Eye = 눈

Knee = 무릎

The 가 in the sentence isn't the same as last episodes, it isn't a subject marker, but from the verb to go 가다

공항 가 주세요.?
Please take me to the airport.

호텔 가 주세요.?
Please take me to the hotel.

여기 가 주세요.?
Please take me here.

You can change it to ask a taxi driver to take you to different places, such as:
압구정 가 주세요.?
Please take me to Apgujeong.

명동 가 주세요.?
Please take me Myeondong.

홍대 가 주세요.?
Please take me Hongdae.

이태원 가 주세요.?
Please take me Itaewon.

Koreans use two number systems, native Korean numbers and Chinese Korean numbers (also called Sino-Korean numbers.) You have to know both number systems to be able to count in Korean, because it depends on what you are counting as to which system you use. Telling time actually uses both systems, native Korean numbers for the 12 hour system, using Sino-Korean numbers for the minutes. It gets a bit more confusing if you the 24 hour system, you can read about it more here.

I will only put one through ten here for this lesson.

Means Japanese language, so the 일본어 part of the sentence can be switched out for a different language and you can make new sentences easily.
